We love photography for so many reasons, but one of our favorite reasons is the historical impact that photography has on our lives.  It’s amazing that we can actually freeze a sliver of time and see it again decades from now.  So, we are thrilled when we are asked to help document historical events.  Weddings are the obvious events that most people want to remember forever – with good reason, since they are one of the most beautiful and elaborate celebration of love that we humans have created.  But we love being there for more subtle historical days, too.  Like proposals.

Photographing a surprise proposal!

We were thrilled when Bradley contacted us about his plans for proposing to his lovely girlfriend, Tina.  And it wasn’t just because of our love affair with Brad’s beard (he was one of our manly models for L’homme Barbu).  He explained an amazing plan to surprise her, surrounded with their closest friends, her favorite musicians performing her favorite song, and us inconspicuously there to document the whole affair.  It was the sweetest plan.  And we were caught up in the lovely nervous energy that surrounded everything.

Bradley and Tina arrived at The Barley Street Tavern, one of our favorite Benson haunts, and we were already there enjoying the concert.  All Young Girls Are Machine Guns were scheduled to play, and we were pretending to be there to photograph their set.  It was the best way we could be inconspicuous, since Tina already knew us.  AYGAMG was fantastic, and we (fellow ukulele enthusiasts) were struck with the depth of Rebecca Lowry’s songwriting.

It was about 6 songs in when Rebecca Lowry, part of Bradley’s planning from the beginning, invited people up to dance.  She began to play Tina’s favorite song.  From my perch toward the back of the bar, I watched Bradley whispering to Tina, and then made their way to the dance floor.  And as they sweetly danced, we snapped a few photos.  And then he went down on one knee.

We felt honored to be invited to participate in such a beautiful, intimate moment.  The whole bar was clapping and cheering.  Thank you to Bradley and Tina for allowing us to be part of their amazing evening.  And stay tuned for what will inevitably be the some of the cutest engagement photos we’ll ever take.

Nationally featured destination wedding photographers

When we went down to Cancún, Mexico to photograph Megan and Brian’s destination wedding, we were bright eyed at the chance to  travel internationally to photograph a beautiful couple on a beautiful beach — what photographer wouldn’t be?  But we are thrilled that the photographs we made on that trip caught the eye of the editor of Le Magnifique.

Last night was amazing.  Last year we were standing outside the sold-out Style Omaha Help All runway show with tears in our eyes.  This year we had the opportunity to shoot the editorials, a fashion film and intro films for each runway boutique.  We have definitely come a long way.

It was a little over two months ago when founder Theresa Farrage contacted us about doing all of the promotional photography for their second annual charity runway show.  “We’re looking for someone who understands fashion and fashion photography, and you guys get it.”  Exciting words for any fashion photographer to hear!  So we began planning our six separate fashion editorials to show the style of each boutique and cause brand involved in the event – romantic, trendy, bohemian, vintage and even boxing and beauty.

Behind the scenes of a fashion photoshoot

There is a lot that goes behind every photograph in a fashion editorial.  Each model went to Rain Salon for hair and makeup (they did such a wonderful job – a shout out on our blog is simply not enough to show our thanks for their hard work and artistry), were styled by the amazing Rocio Doyle, then headed to the location for a shoot that would last anywhere from 4 – 6+ hours, depending on the number of models.  They suffered through cold, multiple locations, spider attacks and of course, laughter attacks.  Apparently when I get excited about what a model is doing I can’t stop myself from saying something weird and making them laugh.  It’s my superpower I suppose.  To see all of the fun we had during these shoots, check out the blooper reel below!

Fashion Runway Show with a Community Cause

SOHA‘s mission is to incorporate fashion, philanthropy and community spirit into an an event that fosters unity, charity and awareness.  Last night there was definitely an environment of community.  The proceeds of ticket sales as well as a portion of items sold at the pop-up shops all went towards the Abide Network – an organization that dreams to see Omaha and other cities around the world have no inner city.  Their mission is to involve caring people in the lives of children, youth, and families in under-resourced areas.

I can’t even describe the energy that was in the room for the runway show.  Ben Gremel rocked the house as DJ and Mulberry Lane kept the show rolling as emcees.  Everyone crowded around the runway, clapping, cheering and rooting on all the models.  For us it was especially gratifying watching many of the models we’ve worked with in the past walk the runway.  Girls like Kali and Sarah who had never even modeled before working with us killed it on the runway.  And as always it was a joy to watch some of our favorite professional models work, like Hope, Nancy, Stephanie, Breann and Robyn.  Their command of the stage is so engaging.  We are constantly amazed and thankful to be surrounded by so many amazingly talented people.

And of course it was great to see some of our favorite boutiques at the pop-up shops!  Many of you remember Paperdoll from our Paperdoll Days project in February.  Check out this great video of their looks on the runway, as well as a shot of us rocking some Paperdoll shades with our good friends, the J-Birds.

Ian and Nicole are budding with life, love and laughter.  Their wedding was exactly what a celebration of love should be and we are so happy that our paths crossing during Megan and Brian’s Cancún wedding.

Omaha Wedding Photography for Nebraska’s warmest couples

We love Ian and Nicole.  From the first time we met them in Mexico, to the  first time we met to plan for their wedding, they made us feel like we were family.  They are so warm and inviting.  And as we watched them interacting with other people around them, we noticed that was a trend.  Everywhere they went, people greeted them with smiles and hugs.  They make family out of the people they care for, and that means that as a new couple they will always be surrounded by love and support which is so important.

Ian and Nicole’s wedding hit up some of the most beautiful locations Omaha has to offer.  The ceremony was at the First Central Congregational Church, which was aglow with stained glass and beautiful woodwork, and was followed by a cocktail hour and reception at the Livestock Exchange Building.  They also had a chance to swing by one of their local haunts, Barrett’s Barleycorn Pub and Grill, where they were welcomed by even more family and friends.

From an emotional toast and tender songs sung by Nicole’s father, Tony, to a surprise first dance with friends performing a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, the whole day was filled with beautiful moments and expressions of love.  It was endearing to watch them interact at the alter, not afraid to let laughter and fun be a part of the ceremony.  Their happiness was apparent and everyone shared in their huge grins throughout the entire day.

We are so thrilled that our paths crossed in Mexico, and are looking forward to our paths crossing many more times over the coming years.  Cheers to you, Ian and Nicole!

Recently we had the honor of photographing the InezGill 2013 Spring Lookbook with all of the new items available at Nylon Magazine!  We had amazing team of artists for this dreamy white fashion editorial, including Kontempo, Sequined Silver Lining, Lashes & Love Artistry and wardrobe provided by Piper Boutique.

Fashion photography for Omaha’s emerging designers

The best part of a fashion photoshoot is seeing other creatives’ ideas and passions come to life.  InezGill designs pieces for the laidback, modern woman who cares about design and fashion as much as she cares about ease and adventure.  Brainstorming for this shoot, we imagined a quirky, confident artist in her simple loft, creating powerful looks with bold statement pieces and not a lot of fuss.  Anyone who has worked with Courtney of InezGill can attest to her adorable eccentricity and having the designer on set was a joy.  You can instantly see how passionate she is about her craft and the thought that she puts behind what she is making and for whom.  And you can see that she surrounds herself with others who are just as passionate.  We are so happy to have had a chance to work with her team and her amazing pieces.

In conjunction with the editorials we shot for SOHA, Omaha’s charity runway show, we shot this fashion film to promote the upcoming runway show at Slowdown on April 20th.  For those of you who attended last year, this year promises to be bigger, better and more exciting, with Slowdown hosting and 20 Nebraska boutiques participating.  We’re so excited to attend!

We’ve been excited to share the editorials we photographed for SOHA, with themes and styles ranging from Romantic to Trendy to Bohemian to Vintage (coming soon!).  If you haven’t seen the editorials yet, please click on the links to see the wonderful work of our Nebraska boutiques and models.

But, shooting video was new and different for us, and was a thrilling experience.  Video has so much vibrance and life, and our shoots with these lovely fashion models was punctuated with bouts of giggling.  Especially when the Romantic models were visited by one very friendly greenhouse spider.  Much fun was captured on film that day!  Stay tuned for our behind the scenes blooper reel!

L’homme Barbu - “the bearded man” in French – is a study of the beard, the face, and the man.  It follows the tradition started with Conversations on a Bus - to know much about the person, and about humanity as a whole, look at the face.

Portrait photography at its beardiest

We love projects like this because they provide us with a frame story.  We’re able to photograph a wide range of people – from designers to food truck chefs to musicians to professors – who seem to have very little in common.  Except for their beards.  The beard is a unique and personalized expression of one’s manhood.  It morphs and chisels the face into a new shape in an endless possibility of ways. We could photograph each of these men a hundred times, and their beard could be a hundred varieties of length and cut.  It is an extension of who they are, and how they choose to represent themselves to the world.  It is the finest accessory of men’s fashion.  The most personal.  The most versatile.  The most unique.

So, of course, as portrait photographers, as fashion photographers, and as lovers of anthropology – we wanted to study this deep wellspring of personal expression.  The eyes are the window to the soul, but the beard is a window to the man’s heart.  It says much about who he is, in the depths of his rugged man soul.  So, we give to you…  L’homme Barbu.

All of these beards were photographed with Tri-X 400 and a Mamiya c330.  We want to thank these men for their respect for the manly traditions, and for their hours of dedication to growing and grooming their beards.  Hats off to you, sirs.

Our third Style Omaha Help All (SOHA) fashion editorial is an homage to the Bohemian style.  Free spirited, rock ‘n roll, easy and comfortable fashion.  We were so pleased to feature clothing from Denim Saloon, Duo Shoes, Jedidiah Clothing for Made for Good, Post & Nickel, Roots & Wings and Stella Clothing boutiques.

Boho chic is one of our favorite styles to photograph.  Flowing fabrics, the mixture of textures and colors and the easy going comfort that comes with a shift dress and boots make for beautiful editorials.  Once again we had the fabulous Rocio Doyle coordinating these funky and fun ensembles behind the scenes, which is always a pleasure.  So with all of the gorgeous colors and patterns, we embraced that psychadelic yet soft feel in this amazing attic for one dreamy, hippie photoshoot.

Tori Tracy is an Omaha model who is “living the dream” – using modeling as a vehicle to travel to Asia and other parts of the world.  A quick glance through her portfolio explains why.  She is stunning, skilled in front of the camera and a pleasure to work with – the type of model that fashion photographers dream of shooting.  While Tori was home from Japan for a few weeks we were able to schedule a couple of shoots with her, a Style Omaha Help All editorial, and this model test shoot.  We can’t wait to work with her again when she returns from her many modeling world adventures!

Day to Stay – a fashion model test shoot

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term “model test,” it’s a photo shoot that gives a photographer and model a chance to work together before embarking on a bigger commercial editorial in the future.  This can be used to play with a new creative idea or simply to become more comfortable with each other’s rhythm and style at a shoot.  Tori was on her way to her Chicago modeling agency and needed classic, simple and informal photos – a style that is very popular in the Chicago and New York fashion markets.  We love this style of photography; elegant black and white portraiture where the focus is no longer the makeup, the hair, the wardrobe, but the emotion, story and simple observance of “being” as art.  We love incorporating this style in everything from test shoots to boudoir shoots, so we were pleased to fill this void in Tori’s portfolio.
